The Vertran is a very unique power wheelchair in that it was designed from the ground up to be operated the majority of time from the standing position. It drives very well and is very stable with the operator in the standing position. However, it is very cumbersome to drive while in the seated position as one experiences a sort of tilt-a-whirl affect. Also, it is plagued by poor traction while seated since one's center of gravity shifts back over the rear castor wheels. Consequently, while this presents few problems indoors, it can be downright prohibitive to leaving a paved path outdoors. I also found it very difficult to pull up to tables or desks since the far front drive wheels and foot platform don't allow for straddling table legs and the armrests are quite long and mounted a bit high.
The chair was designed under the premise that when one is able-bodied, you stand up and walk where you're going, and finally sit down again once you've arrived. As a result, transitioning from seated to standing or vice versa is very quick and smooth. Utilizing Penny & Giles controllers provides a stable and reliable electronics platform. Since FENA Design is located here in Minneapolis, local service is excellent, and the fitting done by Jay is second to none as he is the chair's visionary designer and a disabled user.
As a stand and drive wheelchair only, the Vertran receives top marks. However it is hindered by a lack of versatility, needing more features such as recline and possibly elevate to be competitive at its price point.
