I have 2 BD-4 rebuild projects...
The
BD-4 was the first true Kitplane designed and originally marketing by
Jim Bede in the early 1970's. It is relatively simple and easy to build by design. It can support engines from 108 (2 seat) to 220 HP (4 seat) - or more as some modified versions have proved. A newly remanufactured laser cut kit is being offered by Tennesee Valley Aviation Products (
TVAP).
BD-4.org is the primary resource for current builders, flyers, and enthusiast's of the BD-4. The BD-4 is not the 'sexiest' airplane with straight lines and a 'boxy' look, however it performs better than most other similar airplane designs able to carry 800 to 1000 lbs of up to 4 humans and baggage at 180 to 200 mph depending how its equipped. (Many BD-4's have been modified over the years, some capable of higher gross wieghts or better top speeds.
Here's a line drawing of the BD-4's design and construction. Check out the Links to the Left.
