These
videos and
images are preliminary documentation of the initial state and responsiveness of my left forearm muscles to Functional Electrical Stimulation on October 8, 2004. This documentation was created for the
Cleveland FES Center. I hope to soon be traveling to Cleveland, Ohio in November for evaluation to see if I will be able to participate in the study of the new 12 Channel forearm implant system. I seem to be an ideal candidate in terms of my strength, the ability to stimulate my paralyzed muscles, and my attitude towards the technology. I look forward to both receiving the system and assisting in the developmental improvement facilitated by my knowledge and background of experience. I would most likely be the 6th individual to receive the system, if everything works out. Combined with the tendon transfer for my brachioradialis to my wrist, I will be able to hold up and move my wrists without external devicesand pick up things with my hands and fingers using my own muscles.
The older 8 channel system first became available through
NeuroControl Corp. in 1997 after the system received FDA approval. It is called
FreeHand System and was successfully implanted in a few hundred people. However the 8 channel system is almost no longer available since the company ran into financial troubles and is now only now supporting existing customers. The new 12 channel system will be an incremental improvement to the old system. To learn more about it you can read about the following four projects of which is composed.
