Mark's New Life
Welcome to Mark Felling's Caring Bridge website. Mark's "Dragonfly" airplane crashed Wednesday, July 2, 2003 due to engine failure. He was alone in the plane. Mark has spinal cord injuries and is categorized as a quadriplegic by the doctors. His injuries are at the C5-6 vertebrate level in his spine. Mark is an extremely determined young (27 year old) man and we believe wonderful things are ahead for him.

Hi everyone,
I thought I would do a quick update. Not a lot new since last Friday when I wrote. Earl, Ben, Priya, my parents and I went back to the cities on Sunday. I left Earl off at the Courage Center to pick Mark up and I took Mom and Dad, Priya and Ben to a restaurant to meet Dee, Jeff and their family, etc for a Mother's Day gathering. Then I continued on to Mark's house and got started again. Earl and Mark came after a stop at Menards to pick up the things that were needed to complete the remaining work. It was very hot so the pool looked very inviting. Jeff brought our passengers to Mark's later in the evening. We worked till about 11:30 and left for home. That was my mother's day :-) There is no end to what could be done, but as far as we are concerned we are finished with it and the house either is on the market or will be on by the weeks end. I am hoping a quick cleanup once every two weeks or so till it is sold will cover it. I have been trying to "catch up" here at home all week; both on sleep and the many things that have been neglected here for the last six weeks or so.
Mark is working hard trying to get things in order in his life-both medical and otherwise to be able to leave the Courage Center and begin his new life in the real world. He keeps running into roadblocks in ordering a wheelchair and anything else it seems he has attempted. The Courage Center is a great place but the communication in the place is horrendous to say the least. The therapists say one thing, resident coordinator says another, scheduling says another and administration-well to be honest, I think the whole place needs re-organizing. There has got to be a better way. No "for profit" institution or organization could ever operate the way they do or they would all be bankrupt. Anyway, hopefully things can all come together for him. He was/is supposed to have the FES (functional electrical stimulation) bike therapy back for twice a week on a maintainence type program but there too, he can't get the left hand to know that the right hand has OK'd it. They have lost the fax from insurance authorizing the therapy like FOUR times already. Maybe he'll have news on the more positive side when I talk to him tonight.
That is about it for now. We still have not had rain around here in spite of much of the metro area and northwestern MN getting some or too much. We are really hoping and praying so maybe soon!!?? Thanks so much for checking on Mark and all of us. I will keep this website going for a while yet so you can follow Mark till he gets moved and settled into his new life. Please keep his friend, Shelly, in your prayers as well. She has been inthe hospital struggling with pneumonia for over a week now. Thanks so much for your love and support. Darlene
