I am now a quadriplegic and use a power wheelchair, however that has not quelled my interest in aviation. During the first few weeks after I regained conscious memory, through long sleepless nights I decided I would fly again and came up with some of the initial ideas for a wheelchair accessible airplane.
During the past two years, often through more long sleepless nights, I have continued to refine and clarify my conceptual design for the Sky Chairiot, the world's first truly wheelchair accessible aircraft. Much consideration has gone into such aspects as safety, primary flight controls, secondary controls such as radios, versatility and reconfigureability for pilots with varying physical ability/disability, and overall marketability in terms of what people might want and what is lacking in the market today. However, significant design challenges remain ...

I have three airplanes right now. One Dragonfly and 2 BD-4's. All are known as Expiramental Homebuilts since they were not completely constucted in a factory with an FAA certification. This does not mean they are unsafe, poorly designed, or un-proven designs - rather quite the opposite. I simply means they were more than 51% constucted and assembled by a private citizen "for their own recreation and education".

The Dragonfly is a very efficent 2 seat design that won the Best New Design award in 1980 at Airventure Oshkosh (the Mecca-like event of Recreational Aviation and Expiramental Homebuilt Aircraft specifically). More than 500 Dragonfly's have or are flying about with at least another 500 at some point of partial completion. The design was based on Burt Rutan's original single seat Quickie. Another 2 place airplane very similar to the Dragonfly, designed about the same time, and also based on the original Rutan Quickie is the Q2. SlipStream Industries currently owns the rights to, and sells plans and kits to build the Dragonfly. Though small and efficient, the Dragonfly is considered a high performance aircraft - and looks like it! My Dragonfly is powered by a75 HP Revmaster R-2100 engine with dual electronic ignition will cruise at about 140 mph on about 4 gallons of 100LL fuel per hour. It can max out at about 160 mph and carry about 400 lbs of pilot, passenger, and baggage.
The BD-4 was the first true Kitplane designed and originally marketing by Jim Bede in the early 1970's. It is relatively simple and easy to build by design. It can support engines from 108 (2 seat) to 220 HP (4 seat) - or more as some modified versions have proved. A newly remanufactured laser cut kit is being offered by Tennesee Valley Aviation Products ( TVAP). BD-4.org is the primary resource for current builders, flyers, and enthusiast's of the BD-4. The BD-4 is not the 'sexiest' airplane with straight lines and a 'boxy' look, however it performs better than most other similar airplane designs able to carry 800 to 1000 lbs of up to 4 humans and baggage at 180 to 200 mph depending how its equipped. (Many BD-4's have been modified over the years, some capable of higher gross wieghts or better top speeds. My BD-4 N147RB was built quite closely to the original plans with conventional gear (taildragger). It is equipped with a Ford 3.8L V6 engine converted and equipped for aircraft use with a high capacity Holley electric leaning carb and dual electronic ignition. It puts out between 190 and 230 HP. The conversion was done based on design documentation published by the controversial Dave Blanton in the 1980's. Dave was not a very politically correct guy which got him into hot water with a few organizations from what I understand, but was a good engineer and backed up the conversion with more than 12 years research and expirence. A newsletter ( Info -- Index) concerning this conversion continues to be published by Bruce Frank.
